The group of community leaders gathered in the Wheeler Creek Community Center had diverse missions. Some came for government agencies, others from non-profit organizations. Individually, these leaders work to build a network of opportunities to better their communities and the lives of the residents that call it home. The common bond that brought them together on this occasion was their shared commitment to increase employment opportunities for residents in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
Specifically, the 60-plus community leaders came together to discuss Wheeler Creek/OAI, Inc. Minority Workers Training (MWT) Program. For the second time, in as many years, the program will begin the new semester in January 2007.
“We are currently in the process of recruiting for eligible participants,” said Mr. Michael Clarke. “This program is so important to our residents. It provides them with a chance to gain a living wage in a field that has a high-growth potential. In short, this program provides residents with real opportunities.”
The three-month program, which is the only one of its kinds offered in the area, will provide participants with in-class instruction, hands-on experience in carpentry, and job placement. Participants will learn the skills and earn certificates to enter the competitive environmental and construction fields, including Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, Lead Abatement, Asbestos Abatement, Mold Remediation.
“The certifications being offered through this program will give our participants an advantage in the workforce,” said Mr. Clarke.
