Wheeler Creek CDC Executive Director Message

Dr. Bessie E. Swann WCCDC Executive Director, and Juan Williams, Emmy-Award winning journalist during the Virginia Governor’s Conference on Housing, where both served as guest speakers

It’s just a few short days before the beginning of the New Year—2007. A time when most people make resolutions. Pledge to do better, be better, make better decisions than the previous year(s).

Essentially, a New Year's resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name “resolution” comes from the fact that these commitments normally are made and go into effect on New Year's Day and ideally stay in effect until the set goal has been achieved. Realistically, most resolutions go unachieved and are often broken fairly soon after the ball drops at midnight announcing the New Year ...no matter how strong our commitment.

Wheeler Creek is asking our residents to stand fast in their resolution to their individual and collective success. We have seen the difference it makes in residents lives when they take charge of their successes. It is no secret that when you take responsibility for every area of your life, and stop blaming others, you ultimately hold the key that will unlock the door to opportunity. Take advantage of the power you posses. Resist the urge to dwarf your dreams.

Remember the credo of Walt Disney: Think. Believe. Dream. Dare.

Live your life in a big way. See the big picture. Pursue big goals. Scratch the words “getting by” from your agenda and replace them with “getting better.” Every year more and more of our residents are doing just that...getting better. They are making a choice to be stronger than their difficulties. They are training for new careers, learning about the principles needed to become first-time homebuyers, and developing the skills to become business owners. Understand that everything we do as an organization is intended to serve as a model for our residents. We want them to see the importance of associating with people who are exemplary in three areas: Intelligence, Energy, and Integrity. We are asking no more than what we as an organization are also committed to doing for this community. We are thinking big thoughts and making bold—courageous—plans for the New Year!
