Some residents recently discovered the benefits of a fun-filled, informative, new health initiative that equipped them with the tools to change their lifestyles. Nearly 30 participants took advantage of the program, which is divided into three distinct components.
Held at the Wheeler Creek Community Center, the Consumer Health Foundation sponsored program provided 1) physical fitness with a certified personal trainer and walking exercise, 2) nutrition education (including classroom instruction as well as free grocery shopping), and 3) health screening (such as monitoring weight and blood pressure). Focusing on curbing the incidences of obesity among female head-of-households in the community, the eight-week program provided participants with not only information that they could share with their families and friends but also gift bags and gift cards for healthy foods.
“They were very excited about the program,” said Mr. Alemayehu Mihret, Wheeler Creek CDC’s Project Manager. “Many participants lost considerable weight in just eight weeks, others reduced blood sugar and most gained awareness of obesity and problems associated with it.” For more information on the program or to register for the upcoming classes in September, call Mr. Mihret at (202) 574-1508.
